I love my Mom.  One story she just told me about was when we were all sitting down while I was a kid watching the movie “Overboard” with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell (a classic).  Apparently there was a point in the movie when Goldie swallows a fly and gasp for air and me and my brother looked at my mom and were like “that’s you!”, we were like 3 and 5 at the time so I don’t remember it, but my Mom did, and she laughed, because it was her, but she gasped for air like that not because she had swallowed a fly, but because she had an allergic reaction, she has been dealing with allergies her whole life.

Allergies suck, they effect your hearing, your breathing, and your since of overall well being.  Well now there is an allergy clinic inside of some hospitals, and it might be something as a community pharmacist to check into.  My mother recently went to one and here we’re her experiences.

After she showed up she had a battery of 18 different allergens prick on her forearms, and they tracked the hives to see her bodies reaction to the items.  Why this was not offered years ago is beyond me, my mom has had asthma, an operation for a deviated septum, and issues with allergens since she was a child.

Now she gets an allergy shot, these are treatments that can help prevent allergic reactions.  The shots are made specifically for each patients needs, and help build immunity to the allergy.

Per Harvard Public Health the allergy shots aka allergen immunotherapy work by injecting low level exposure to the allergen, and rather than the traditional response where all the antibodies gang up on the offending allergen and cause the sneezing and runny nose the immune system learns a new way to deal with the allergen.  The body deals with the foreign substance by slowly containing the offending allergen rather than the traditional all out assualt.  The shots are recommended for people with severe symptoms who do not respond to the usual medications.

If you have some patients who are in for over the counter seasonal allergy medication it might be a good idea to recommend that they ask there doctor if they might be a good candidate for these shots.  My mom was dealing with allergies for years, and just heard about them, and she is stoked cause so far its working and her symptoms aren’t as bad as in years past.
